Eyelid surgery can be performed on anyone but it is mainly popular in East Asia. Surgery can deepen or create an eyelid crease as well as adjusting the horizontal and vertical width of the eyes. Eyelid surgery is also suitable for those with ptosis, or whose eyelids have sunken with age.
This is the process of creating a crease in a monolid, or deepening a shallow eyelid crease. Double eyelid surgery results in larger, more vibrant eyes. It is a solution for those who feel uncomfortable with “small” or “sleepy” eyes.
There are three methods of creating a double eyelid: The incision method, the non-incision method and the partial-incision method.
The incision method is the most permanent, secure form of double eyelid surgery. A surgeon will make a cut along the line that will become the eyelid crease and remove excess muscle and fat. Stitches are then removed one week after surgery. The eyelid will be lightly scarred by the procedure.
The non-incision method is better for people who are uncomfortable with surgical incisions around the eye. Surgeons use thread to affix the skin layers together. However, these threads are less secure than an incision and can unwind. Some surgeons only use three anchor points on the eyelid. To decrease the risk of unwinding, ID Hospital’s surgeons use double threads affixed to seven anchor points.
The partial incision method marries the security of an incision, with the lack of scarring. The surgeon removes excess fat and muscle through a small incision. Then the eyelid crease is created using non-incisional means.
Ptosis is a severe occlusion of the eye by the surrounding fats and tissues. And these so-called “sleepy eyes” can be widened with various methods. Mid-level ptosis and asymmetrical eyes can be improved without an incision. But an incision is recommended for severe cases of ptosis.
Canthoplasty is a type of eyelid surgery that is less known. This procedure can change the overall shape of the eye horizontally.
An epicanthoplasty will extend the inner corner of the eye.
A lateral canthoplasty will extend the outer corner of the eye.
A lateral hotz canthoplatsy will extend and lower the outer corner of the eye. Therefore this is good for people who are unhappy with upturned eyes and desire a more almond like shape.
