Body Contouring

How to know if you are an ideal liposuction candidate?

Even though liposuction procedures have been around for quite a while, there are many who do not know who is an ideal liposuction candidate.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove the subcutaneous fat from different parts of the body. However, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; rather it is a body sculpting procedure to help sculpt the body to a more desirable shape.

So what makes an ideal liposuction candidate?

Liposuction will not help you lose weight; it removes up to 5 pounds of fat or more, but not really suited for extreme weight loss. Pockets of fat are removed to sculpt the body. The ideal liposuction candidate has to be within 10-15 pounds of their ideal weight.

Some patients may be able to have more fat extracted, even though they have more than 15 pounds of fat, but that is not the case for every single person.

Wearing the compression suit after the surgery for the prescribed amount of time is important for the body to maintain the new shape.
If you are overweight, eat unhealthy food, never work out, then you are not ready for liposuction.

Starting a healthy lifestyle, with healthy foods and a good workout routine, before considering surgery will help you maintain the fat removed after surgery. After surgery, diet and exercise are crucial to make sure that you do not gain any of the weight back.

Liposuction is not permanent in the sense, even though the fat cells are removed permanently, the remaining fat cells can get bigger if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is not a “Eat all you can and never gain weight” ticket, you have every chance of gaining it all back if you do not change your eating habits and include exercise in your daily routine.

Another factor is skin elasticity. Patients with good skin elasticity can have surgery, but patients who have loose skin are not an ideal liposuction candidate. Additional surgery may be required to address the loose skin, so make sure to check the details with your doctor before committing to surgery.

Surgeon’s skills differ, and so does each patient’s condition. Some patients can have more fat extracted in comparison to others, but a face to face consultation is necessary to determine if you are an ideal liposuction candidate.
