Korean Rhinoplasty trends have changed throughout the years since the rise of rhinoplasty popularity in Korea. Not only is rhinoplasty is one of the oldest plastic surgeries performed worldwide but it is also the most performed surgery, regardless of gender and age.
Since the nose’s location is on the central part of the face, a balanced nose is crucial for the perfect facial harmony. Altering the nose will alter the facial proportions, so surgery’s main goal is to balance out the facial features by altering the nose. Changing the nose shape, size or height alters the proportion of the chin.
Korean Rhinoplasty trends, differ from other countries simply because Asian noses usually have low nose bridges and tips. The most sought-after feature was a high, straight nose bridge with a pointy tip, because it made the nose look more “sophisticated” like a European nose.
For that type of nose, an L-shaped silicone implant was used to create the projection of the nose bridge and upturned tip. The L-shaped silicone elevated the tip and extended to the tip all the way to the base of the nose. It made the tip look a little unnatural, brought with it many problems, like infection, capsular contracture and silicone implant extrusion.
Most people opted to have the same nose shape, because that was the only type of rhinoplasty procedure available. Due to various problems with the implant, capsular contracture was very common after surgery. This would result in an overly upturned nose tip, famously called Dwayji Ko (돼지 코) “Pig Nose” due to the overexposure of the nostrils, making the nose resemble a pig’s nose. The nose shape was unnatural because of its rather “plastic” look, and with time, people wanted to look more natural. So as the surgeons gained more clinical experience, the methods for surgery also evolved.
As the surgery techniques evolved, so did the Korean Rhinoplasty trends. Instead of using the same techniques for each and every patient, customized surgery is now more popular. Rather than creating an unnatural shape, the nose projection, dorsum height, nasal tip width, alar base size etc. are all taken into consideration when creating the surgery plan. I-shaped silicone implants are utilized to heighten the dorsum (nose bridge) and the nasal tip is defined with use of cartilage grafting from the nose or ear.
Rather than having an upturned nose, people prefer to have the nose tip lowered so the nostrils are not visible, and a straight nose bridge rather than a curved one is preferred. Due to people wanting more natural noses that fit their face shapes, Korean rhinoplasty trends have shifted towards more natural-looking nose shapes.
Korean rhinoplasty trends have evolved to encompass noses of all ethnicities, due to using a formula to create a nose that matches the individual’s face. Yet again, Korean rhinoplasty trends is expected to change in the future, and with it usher a new era of plastic surgery experience.
