Choi Yoon-young’s surgery diary

Name : Choi Yoon-young
Age : 31 years old
Surgery date : May 20, 2009
Concern : my jaw that continues to grow even
---------------more as I age
I have mandibular prognathism. When I did not know anything, this complication represented merely uncomfortable teeth structure and jaw, but the jaw that was projecting outward had turned into my complex unknowingly. Mandibular prognathism grew slowly from my puberty years.

I wouldn’t move, but then my teachers often told me, “Don’t stick out your mouth like that.” Meanwhile, my friends would ask me whether I am angry. Moreover, I used to hear, “Don’t stick out your jaw when you are watching TV. Tuck in your jaw.’ Because I kept hearing these comments, I ended up being very sensitive about my jaw. Presently, I teach at an institute. Once during my class, I heard the children say, “The jaw is projected outward. It is long. Pronunciation is funny. Her saliva comes out when she talks.” I try to teach by raising my voice since I feel the urge to offset my shortcomings by trying harder. However, these experiences really hurt. I want to change before the pain of my mind and body deepens.

Surgery plan

Sanghoon Park, M.D., Ph.D
In case of Choi Yoon-young, she had both a long face, referred to normally as ‘extremely long face’ and mandibular prognathism. Compared to the normal jaw, the lower jaw was afflicted by severe mandibular prognathism in which the jaw projected outward by at least 11mm while the lower jaw and center of the face were very long. To solve these issues, bimaxillary surgery was conducted to subject both the upper and the lower jaws to bone fracture. As such, upper jaw’s length was reduced by 3mm while 11mm was pushed back, and occlusion of the upper and lower jaws was set anew. After the surgery, the long face was reduced by 10mm, and her face turned to normal face length.

Lee Yang-Ku, D.D.S., M.S.
Because she has much Dental prosthesis in the molar and was afflicted by severe mandibular prognathism, orthodontics, before and after surgery was not easy to perform. However, Surgery First Orthognathic Approach was performed after various precision tests. Currently, the patient is undergoing orthodontics to align the teeth normally in line with the new jaw since set of teeth were transmuted due to mandibular prognathism.

Changes post-surgery

post-surgery

This is two months after the surgery. After the surgery, I am haring from others that I look young since my cheek looks fuller while my face used to be rather bony in the past and since my face became significantly shorter. ^^ My friends whom I saw after a while and who don’t know that I had surgery ask me whether I had double eyelid surgery. These days, I am startled when I see my pre-surgery photo, getting reminded that this is how I looked in the past. After the mandibular prognathism surgery, I am laughing and smiling a lot. My impression is brighter now. I keep looking at a mirror.
