Kang Yeon-jung’s surgery diary

Who am I?
Name : Kang Yeon-jung
Age : 29 years old
Surgery date : April 17, 2009
Concern : mandibular prognathism
Because my family was financially challenged when I was a child, I grew up without knowing that I have mandibular prognathism. Even when my teeth would rot, I had to push back the treatment since we had no means to go to a dentistry.

Later when I grew up, I found out that the mandibular prognathism causes dental caries and gum disease since teeth arrangement is not even. I only have eight teeth today due to dental caries, which resulted from mandibular prognathism since I could not get the proper care. My face is different from that of others with the lower jaw projected outward, and with the middle of the face sunken deep. Because of the few teeth that remain, I always cover my face with a hat. Moreover, I find it most comfortable to eat alone since I am ashamed to show to anyone how I eat with the teeth that do not occludebite each other properly. My eyes fill up with tears as soon as someone talks about my face. But then, the lifetime opportunity was presented to me. I applied for the make-over program, Olive Show, which granted me the opportunity. I would like to undergo surgery immediately so that I can recover the cheerful, positive mindedness just like when I was a child and I want to laugh, not cry. Would that be possible?

Surgery plan

Sanghoon Park, M.D., Ph.D
Kang Yeon-jung is afflicted with mandibular prognathism with the lower jaw projected outward. The upper jaw is projected outward somewhat as well. Bimaxillary surgery that involves bone fracture of the both the upper and lower sides was performed to rotate the upper jaw, 6mm using Maxillary rotation while 2mm was pushed back. Moreover, the lower jaw that was projected outward was pushed back by 17mm and the left and right symmetry was set since there was some asymmetry. Length of the face after the surgery was reduced in overall, and the face turned natural after the upper and lower mouths that were projected outward were pushed back.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,
Seokjae Lee, M.D.

In case of mandibular prognathism, teeth arrangement is not even, and this causes dental caries and gum disease due to mismatched occlusion. Kang Yeon-jung had mandibular prognathism symptoms and she had neglected dental cares when she was young, without getting the proper treatment. Thus, she had only eight teeth of her own by the time she got hospitalized. Since post-surgery orthodontics was difficult to perform, denture work using mini implant was performed, ensuring that the relationship between the upper and lower jaws suits the teeth well, which in turn can help the patient to chew and talk effectively. Increasingly careful teeth management is required in case of the mandibular prognathism.

Changes post-surgery

post-surgery
Today, I got shot for the Olive Show Make over special she. It was not easy to showcase myself in front of many people. And getting broadcasted was not easy by all means. Early morning, I had to go to a beauty salon to fix my hair and to get make-up. Then, I had to change into a beautiful clothes. I was very anxious and nervous, but I managed to complete the shooting session. To be honest, even I am surprised to see how much I changed. I thought to myself that I have this other side of me. I am so grateful to the personnel at the Olive Show and ID Hospital who worked so hard for me. Now, I think that I can become someone who can laugh more than cry.
