Facial Contouring

Why are men’s facial contouring surgeries popular?

The popularity of men’s facial contouring surgeries is on the rise as an increasing amount of men are opting for surgery. Decades before, the extent of cosmetic surgery for men would be straightening the nose bridge or fixing breathing problems with septoplasty. As the times change, so do the aesthetic requirements. Men have to look polished in order to maintain their place in society.

This trend has spread not only with singers, movie stars, artists, but even to regular people who want to get more out of life. Just like a tailored suit enhances the looks, making a person look sophisticated, so does an enhancement that alters your facial proportions. In the past, rugged masculine looks were deemed handsome, but with the advent of the new age, men with softer features are growing in popularity. Boyish good looks are also sought after, with an emphasis on youthful looks.

Male’s face structure is more angular, with a square-shaped jaw which is considered masculine, is getting replaced with smaller cheekbones and a sharper defined chin. So why are men’s facial contouring surgeries popular?

The idea that men have to look masculine is perhaps one that is intrinsically ingrained in the mind, though studies show that not all women find “masculine” features attractive. In fact, according to this study, overall women prefer men with “feminine” features over men with “masculine features. Although there is no proven correlation as yet between that, and the increase of male patients going under the knife, there are a large number of men looking to soften their prominent masculine features and opt for a softer look.

Men’s facial contouring surgeries are also undergone to correct asymmetry and reconstructive surgery due to an accident rather than just cosmetic purposes.

The ethical question may rise, that placing too much importance on looks is not a positive thing, especially if it means undergoing surgery. However, as plastic surgery techniques are advancing, and surgery is no longer being considered taboo, the numbers of men undergoing surgery enhancements are bound to increase.
