What is Exo Plasma Exchange (EPE)? Process & Diseases Treated

Hi, this is Riley from ID Hospital! 👋

Today, we’re diving into Exo Plasma Exchange (EPE)—a breakthrough treatment that purifies blood by removing harmful antibodies and toxins.
Many people are curious about what Exo Plasma Exchange (EPE) is, how the procedure works, and which diseases it can help manage.
In this first part of our series, we’ll break it down step by step.

What is Plasma Exchange?

Plasma exchange, also called antibody exchange therapy, is a medical procedure that filters plasma from the blood to eliminate unnecessary or harmful components.

It is widely used in treating autoimmune, neurological, hematologic, renal, and metabolic diseases.

How the Process Works

With 6–8 sessions at 2-week intervals, patients can experience noticeable improvements in vitality, skin condition, and overall health.

  1. Consultation & Blood Test
Confirm whether the procedure is possible (blood test, emergency index check, etc.)
  2. Catheter Insertion
A micro-tube is inserted into a vein in the arm or neck.
  3. Plasma Removal
Specialized equipment separates plasma from the blood to filter out unnecessary substances.
  4. Infusion
Clean albumin or plasma is infused back into the body to restore balance.
  5. Recovery
The procedure takes about 2–3 hours, and patients can usually return home the same day.

Diseases Treated with Plasma Exchange

Autoimmune Diseases

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Immune thrombocytopenia
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome

Neurological Diseases

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Multiple sclerosis

Hematologic Diseases

  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Immune thrombocytopenia

Renal Diseases

  • Acute nephritis
  • Nephrotic syndrome

Metabolic Diseases

  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Amyloidosis

Pre-cautions

Plasma exchange must be performed carefully after thorough blood tests and evaluation of the patient’s condition.
Potential risks include blood clotting issues or allergic reactions, which should be closely monitored.
