One of the top stories that swept internet and news headlines this week was Vanity Fair’s cover of Caitlyn Jenner. Jenner’s instantly iconic photo, with loose wavy hair, elegant makeup and cream bustier echoed the timeless beauty of old Hollywood glamour.

Though Jenner was always considered attractive, the soft contours of her face and body also brought attention and awareness to the various cosmetic procedures transgender women choose to undergo. Facial feminization is a broad term that is used to classify the cosmetic procedures including facial bone contouring, hairline repositioning and tracheal shaving.

ID Hospital, Korea’s first plastic surgery hospital specializing in maxillofacial surgery, has perfected the technique of many facial contouring procedures that are sought after by transgender women to achieve a more feminine look. Orthognathic surgery, V line surgery, zygoma reduction, cheek implants, and fat grafting are a few of the surgeries that transgender women successfully undergo at ID Hospital.

Jenna Talackova, a Canadian model and television personality known for successfully competing in the Miss Universe Canada pageant after being initially disqualified for being a trans woman, chose ID Hospital for procedures to help achieve a more soft and feminine look. Talackova choose to have orthognathic, or double jaw, surgery and V-line surgery, procedures which realign the jaws and slim the mandible, respectively.

Facial feminization procedures are not merely cosmetic surgeries but “life-saving surger[ies],” says Sasha Alexander, director of membership at Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a legal project in New York City working to advance the rights of transgender people. “[Transgender women] experience so much violence and harassment and discrimination, and so it’s not just a cosmetic issue.”
