ID hospital specializes in facial bone surgeries and with the influx of overseas questions, many people have questions and concerns about surgery procedures. ID Hospital has a dedicated team of facial bone surgery specialists, so we posed all your questions to them to clarify some myths about facial bone contouring surgeries.
What are the long term risks and side effects of having facial bone surgeries?
Long term risks and side effects are minimal in facial bone surgeries, if the operation is performed properly. The most frequent side effects are temporary decrease of facial sensation and facial swelling or bruising, which are normalized after certain amount of time.
What kind of drugs are used for anesthesia during surgery?
We perform the surgery under general anesthesia in ID hospital. Gas anesthesia with sevoflurane is used.
Please discuss patient cases that cannot have revision facial bone surgeries?
If there is no room left to operate on the patients’ bones due to the previous surgery, revision cannot be performed. That is the reason we advise the patients to have their first surgery with a highly experienced surgeon so as to avoid getting revision surgery.
What does the implant for the cheek look like? Is it just for the front of the cheek or is there a side cheekbone implant?
The implant can be expanded to cover side areas of the cheekbone, if we make the implant in that way. Implant can be designed to fit for the exact needs of the patients, with the help of preoperative CT scanning and 3D printing technology.
What are the risks of getting a cheekbone implant?
The most bothering complication after getting an implant is postoperative infection or inflammation.
Is there any contouring surgery to make the mid face shorter?
Unfortunately, for the middle part of the face, it can only be shortened with orthognathic maxillary surgery (Le fort I operation). Zygoma reduction can only reduce the facial width but cannot alter the mid-face length. For patients with a long philtrum, philtrum reduction surgery can shorten the length of philtrum and the upper lip at once.
Is there any difference between facial bone surgeries performed at ID Hospital compared to other hospitals?
ID hospital is a pioneer in the field of facial contouring surgery not only in Korea but worldwide. We developed numerous methods like T-osteotomy method for genioplasty, lengthening and shortening genioplasty, better way of sagittal resection, effective approach of zygoma reduction etc. Other hospitals have learned and adopted the techniques which were originally developed by ID hospital.
After 30 to 40 years post-surgery, will I have any joint problems on the surgery area? Are there any long-term side effects?
Zygoma and mandible angle reduction do not involve temporo-mandibular joint relocation. Although joint problems can happen in jaw area, it is quite common problem in general population, and not related to facial bone contouring surgery.
Will the patient feel any pain on rainy days? ( e.g. people who have fractured leg or arm bones feel pain on rainy days, so is there a possibility for that type of pain on rainy days)?
Absolutely not.
After genioplasty, is it safer to have the pins removed or is it safer to keep the pins as is?
The pin can be kept in its place if there are no problems. Although the material of the pin is titanium which is bio-inert (inactive and safe inside the human body), it is a foreign body material and has little potential to cause foreign body reaction in the long run.
Can patients have orthognathic surgery on either the upper jaw or the lower jaw individually?
Yes. It depends on the surgeon’s diagnosis(after examining the patient) and desire of the patient.
Are pins used to fix the cheekbone in place if using silicone implants? What about chin implant?
Yes. The silicone implant is fixed with two or three titanium screws, both the cheekbones and chin.
Can we do cheek augmentation or square jaw augmentation with fillers like it is done in the West?
Yes. Cheek and square jaw augmentation can be done with fillers. For the standard injection using hyaluronic acid fillers to the cheek and jaw area, the effects last for about 12 to 18 months.
Can I see my excised bone after surgery? (For patients who want to see their bones, can we show it to them?)
Yes, but current Korean regulations indicate that all biomaterials from the surgery should be disposed of, and handling of such materials is monitored. If the patient requests to see the bone (request can be made during consultation), then they can see the bones after the surgery via photography, taken during the surgery by hospital staffs.
