Ptosis is a condition wherein the eyelids are droopy due to the weak levator muscles (levator aponeurosis). The levator muscle helps open the eyelids, so if they are weak, the eyes look droopy, making the person look sleepy or lazy.
Functionality-wise, it can cause the person to use their forehead muscles to raise the eyelids, so forehead wrinkles will be visible over time, and may require botox or additional forehead lifting. For severe ptosis cases, that can basically require them to tilt their head back to be able to see, so getting surgery is advised. Aesthetically, the sleepy-looking eyes make the features look dull, so getting surgery will help the eyes open up, and brighten the other facial features.
People with droopy eyelids or sleepy-looking eyes and people with asymmetric eyelids (due to ptosis in one eye) can have a consultation so the surgeon can examine and conclude if ptosis correction surgery is required.
The level of ptosis can be determined by the distance between the eyelid and the pupil. Mild to medium ptosis cases can be resolved with non-incision ptosis correction surgery but for severe ptosis, incision method is advised. Both methods simultaneously create a double eyelid along with addressing the ptosis.
The non-incisional method is advised if the eyelids do not have excess skin or fat, which weighs the eyelid down. If there is a lot of skin and fat, then incisional method is preferred.
If the saggy eyelids are caused by excess skin and fats in the eyelid area, then double eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty in other countries) will help define the eyelids. The eyelid excess skin and fat are removed, but additional process is not required. With the ptosis surgery, the levator muscles will also be tied together to create a double eyelid, along with improved eyelid function.
With incision ptosis surgery, the incision is made in the upper eyelid area, and the levator muscle is identified. Sutures are used to tighten the levator muscles, which is will adjust the strength of the muscles, lifting up the eyelids. The sutures are placed, then the muscle is reattached, and additional sutures are used to create the double eyelid shape.
Compared to double eyelids surgery, ptosis surgery healing period may be a little longer. Most important thing is to follow all post-surgery care instructions and take steps to heal faster from surgery. The sutures are removed seven days post-surgery, and patients can safely travel back to their countries.
