Facial Contouring

What you need to know about revision facial contouring surgeries

Facial contour surgeries, such as zygoma reduction surgery, V-line surgery, genioplasty and facial contouring surgeries in general are used to alter the contour of the face. Changing the facial bone structure changes the overall image of the face creating more facial harmony.

The ideal facial ratio is 1:1:1 and a variation of 1:1:08 is preferred by Asians, as the ideal is a sharper shorter chin.

Since having a small and slender V-shaped chin and slender cheekbones have become the standard of beauty, and the demand for the facial contouring surgeries has increased.

Along with the demand for those surgeries, the rate of revision surgeries is also rising. If proper evaluation and surgical plan were not performed well, it will greatly affect the surgery results.

A highly experienced surgeon has to review your X-rays in order to know if surgery is possible.

Revision Facial contouring surgeries are difficult for both the patient and the surgeon, because the bone has already been manipulated by the first surgeon. So what can actually be corrected is dependent on how safe it is and how much of the bone can be further removed.

The most performed revision surgeries are for jaw reduction, chin reduction and cheekbone reduction surgeries. For V-line revision surgery particularly, revision is required due to inadequate bone resection or asymmetry.

For cases where the primary surgery left an uneven shape, or asymmetry, revision surgery can be an alternative solution.

The most important part that determines if revision can be done is the placement of the nerves. The inferior alveolar nerve should be avoided at all costs. If the bone has been resected too close to the nerves, then revision is impossible without causing nerve damage.

Nerve damage can result in permanent droopy mouth, inability to control mouth movements etc. so once must be positive that nerve damage cannot occur, before going ahead with a revision surgery.

For the cheekbones reduction surgery, resecting too much of the cheekbone will result in a flat face, and the face will tend to look longer due to the flattened cheekbones. Resecting too little of the bone, will not produce enough facial width reduction. Just the perfect amount of the cheekbone has to be excised to produce perfect results.

Effective resection of the bone allows for maximum results.

With revision facial contouring surgeries in particular, getting the surgeries right the first time around is essential, as there may not be another chance to be able to get your desired look.

However, in case you need a revision, selecting a highly experienced surgeon who has operated many revision facial contouring surgeries is essential.
