The latest surgery trend is having a small face. Jaw surgery is one method which can be used to reduce the size of the face. Surgery trends tend to differ from East to West but a common point is emerging with the increase demand to reduce the size of the face. Having a slightly larger facial bone structure compared to others, may give a more masculine or harsher feel, whereas a smaller, oval shaped face looks soft and feminine. Due to the differences in beauty standards, there are a few surgery options once can consider depending on the desired results.
The surgeries can be divided mainly into four surgery categories. The osteotomy methods differ based on the desired face shapes, so upon consultation, the surgeon customizes the surgery plan based on the individual’s overall facial bone structure.
Orthognathic Surgery

This surgery differs from the other two, simply because it is a functionality surgery rather than being completely aesthetic. Orthognathic surgery adjusts the upper and lower jaws in the correct position. The procedure is suitable for conditions including mandibular prognathism, mouth protrusion, facial asymmetry, and other abnormal positioning of the jaw. There are different types of orthognathic surgeries depending on the type of osteotomy.
Traditionally, braces were required to be worn 1 to 1.5 years prior to surgery, however, the double Jaw surgery method innovated by ID Hospital has shortened the whole surgery time by eliminating the braces prior to surgery. After the surgery, a wafer is worn for one month followed by braces. Usually, depending on the cases, braces are required after the surgery to re-align the bite.

This surgery can be done alone, but for some cases, both the orthognathic surgery and an additional facial contouring surgery is required to reduce the size of the jaw further. The golden ratio is used to determine the ideal proportion for a patient’s face.
V-line Surgery

V-line surgery, also known as jaw reduction surgery in some countries, actually combines two surgeries together as one. Jaw reduction reduces the size of the jaw bone (mandible angle) and a chin genioplasty surgery either reduces or extends the chin bone.
For all types of jaw surgeries, there are different types of methods for the V-line surgery, and osteotomy methods differ. Dia-osteotomy, T-osteotomy, etc. are recommended by the surgeon upon reviewing a patient’s X-rays.
Mandible Angle Reduction/ Square Jaw surgery
Patients who do not wish to alter their chin, have the square jaw surgery as a surgery option. Only the mandible angle jaw is reduced, leaving the chin as is. This surgery option is for patients who have the perfect chin, but very wide jaws. The jaws are reduced to create a more balanced facial contour.
Mini V-line Surgery

Mini V-line surgery uses osteotomy to create a sharper chin. This surgery is suitable for someone with a wide, asymmetric, long or short chin. A long chin can be made shorter and a short chin can be made longer depending on the osteotomy type. This surgery is particularly liked by patients who like having a wide jaw and defined chin, like Kyle Jenner.
In conclusion, depending on the current condition of your jaw, your desired results can be achieved with the right type of jaw surgery procedure. Online consultation can help you get an idea of the procedures, but a board certified surgeon has to examine you further for a detailed surgical plan. If having a smaller jaw is what you desire, then look no further!
