What is Asian breast augmentation?

Is there really a need for Asian breast augmentation?

In essence, due to the differences in the physical characteristics of Asian women, special attention has to be taken for a breast augmentation surgery.

Breast tissue density and why it is important

The breasts are made up of fatty tissue, dense breast tissue (fibroglandular tissues) milk ducts, and glands. If the breasts have a high percentage (around 75%) of dense breast tissues then they are known as dense breasts.

With Asian women, a higher percentage has dense breast tissues in comparison to their western counterparts. Women with lesser body fat are likely to have higher dense breast tissues rate.

Pre-surgery Examinations

A mammogram is used to check the breast for any abnormalities.

On a mammogram, the fatty tissues are black/transparent whereas dense breast tissues look white.

Cancer also appears white on a mammogram, so this makes it difficult to see any abnormalities in the breast. Due to the density of the breast tissues, breast cancer can go undetected.

At ID Hospital, before breast augmentation surgery, not only is a mammogram done to detect any issues. It is done together with ultrasound, to further examine the breast area.

With an ultrasound, the dense breast tissues and any abnormalities can be detected more accurately.

For further testing, a Mammotome device is used for biopsy to collect the abnormal breast tissues. This can be done along with the breast augmentation surgery.

Asian Breast Augmentation Surgery

Due to Asian women’s petite structure and frame, more expertise is necessary to ensure the surgery results look as natural as possible. Since Korean surgeons have specialized in Asian breast augmentation surgery, they have far more experience with these types of cases.

Below are a few points to consider when considering an Asian breast augmentation surgery.

Incision area: Most popular incision areas are either below the breast (inframammary) or in the armpit area (transaxillary). Many Asian patients come to Korea for surgery because Western-trained surgeons do not have much experience with transaxillary incisions.

Implant position selection: Placing the implant under the muscle is the most preferred method, but the placement recommendation may differ in special cases.

Implant shape and size: Round or Teardrop shaped implants are used. Read this post about Breast implants.

Natural Looking breasts: Due to less fatty tissues in the breasts, a bigger implant size will make the breast look more “fake”. The fatty tissues in the breast area usually work as a soft cushion around the implant, so women who have fat tissues in the breast area will get more natural looking results.

Cleavage: Even though many women have breast augmentation to get the coveted sexy cleavage, it is not always possible. The surgeon can only place the implants up to 2-3 centimeters from the edge of the sternum. Depending on the thickness of your sternum, the distance between the breasts differs, the wider the sternum, the wider space. However, you can use a push-up bra to get the sexy cleavage look.

Breast implant pocket: A pocket is created for the breast implants to be placed. There are different placements, and depending the on the incision area and surgery method, the surgeon will recommend a placement type to suit you. If the proper distance is not kept fromt he sternum, this could result in a surgery complication known as Uniboob.

Stitches removal: Derma Bond is used, so stitches removal is not necessary. However, traveling right away is not recommended, a week stay minimum is required to ensure satisfactory surgery results. Take the proper steps for healing from surgery.

Special considerations: For revision breast augmentation surgeries, it is important to have the mammogram and ultrasound done before proceeding with surgery, especially if revisions surgery is due to capsular contracture.

With capsular contracture, revision surgery (read more here) may not be successful if all the capsules are not removed with a capsulectomy. Read Maya’s revision breast augmentation experience here

Take all these points into consideration when planning to get your Asian breast augmentation surgery.

ID Hospital has had patients from over 99 countries worldwide and has highly experienced board-certified surgeons who have worked with diverse people. Each surgery plan is customized for the individual after consultation and a thorough examination to ensure the best surgery results possible.
