Q&A
-
What is scaling?
Scaling is a procedure that removes tartar from the surface of teeth above the gum line, clearing away plaque and tartar, which are primary causes of gum disease, to keep the tooth surface clean.
-
Is scaling necessary?
"Brushing = tidying up, scaling = deep cleaning." Even with thorough daily oral hygiene, some bacterial film remains. Proper brushing helps, but scaling prevents oral diseases by cleaning out residue that builds up between teeth.
-
Do I only need to scale once?
If you have poor oral hygiene, gum disease, or smoke, regular scaling every six months is recommended. For those with good oral health, once a year is usually sufficient.
-
Is scaling painful?
Patients unaccustomed to scaling or those with sensitive gums may experience some pain or sensitivity afterward. To alleviate fear, id Dental offers pain-free scaling with a simple numbing mouthwash instead of injection anesthesia.

Why Scaling is Necessary
-
01
- Tartar Removal
- Even with brushing, flossing, and interdental brushes, plaque may remain and harden into tartar, which requires scaling to remove and prevent oral disease.
-
02
- Teeth Whitening
- Staining from smoking or colored foods can make teeth appear unattractive, affecting social confidence. Scaling restores natural tooth color, improving both gum health and appearance.
-
03
- Bad Breath Prevention
- Severe halitosis is often caused by plaque mixing with food to release unpleasant gases. Scaling effectively removes plaque to reduce bad breath.
-
04
- Oral Disease Prevention
- While scaling is known for cosmetic benefits, it also removes plaque and tartar, acting like a preventive dental treatment against oral diseases.
