How to Prepare for Plastic Surgery

Some people can underestimate the impact of plastic surgery on their daily living. Plastic surgery is surgery, and you’ll come out of it feeling rough. Here are some of the best things you can do before surgery to make your recovery a little smoother and prepare for plastic surgery.

1. Follow fasting rules

This is the most important rule of all. Eating before going under anesthesia can be fatal. You will be told to fast for a certain number of hours before surgery. Fasting includes not drinking water as well. If you can only remember one rule, remember not to eat or drink before surgery!

2. Clean your living space

After surgery you won’t have much ability to do anything except rest. And it’s best to do that in a clean space. Not just for hygiene, but also for your peace of mind.

3. Prepare healthy food

Ask your doctor what kind of foods you should be eating, and what you should avoid. And make sure to prepare enough of it so you can survive while getting your energy back.

4. Don’t take substances

It may be a surprise, but smoking can decrease your blood flow – which can cause complications. However, if you have no intention of quitting forever, even quitting for just one day can bring down the risk of complications. In a similar way, alcohol can thin the blood which increases the risk of an uncontrollable bleed.

5. Remove all nail polish and piercings

This rule can often be a surprise. Plastic surgery usually doesn’t care about hands and feet, so why take off the mani-pedi? Aside from the possibility of introducing pathogens into the sterile operating theatre, there is another reason. In order to measure your blood oxygen saturation level, a device is placed over your finger. Nail art can interfere with the readings.

6. Arrange transportation

Patients, regardless of how much they want to save money, are strongly advised to not try to go home via public transport. It can be cramped, busy and you’re not guaranteed a seat. It’s always better to decide before surgery what your transport plans are going to be. It’s best to either take a taxi or a lift from a friend/relative.

7. Find someone to look after you or talk with you

Being alone all day, doing nothing except lying in bed is not good for your physical or mental health. If you can, ask a friend or relative to come over, or have phone calls regularly. This can help a lot with your mood.
