With any surgery, there is always a chance that you may need a revision surgery. Reasons may vary but in case you are considering a revision breast augmentation surgery, we will discuss reasons below.

What is a revision breast augmentation surgery?

Patients who have had an unsuccessful breast augmentation surgery have surgery a second time to correct the issues from the first surgery. There are many reasons for requiring a revision breast augmentation surgery.

1. Ruptured implants: A ruptured implant can be considered a serious situation, and may need immediate intervention, especially if the contents leak. In very rare cases the implants do rupture within a short time frame of the surgery, for most cases they break down over time. If you notice any changes in the shape of the implant, seeking immediate medical attention is advised to avoid any serious complications.

2. Capsular contracture: Scar tissue that forms around the implant may tighten and grow hard, restricting the implant. This can displace the implant, cause discomfort and cause breasts to harden, so surgery is required. Before the revision breast augmentation surgery, the surgeon has to remove the scar tissues (capsulectomy) accumulated in the breast pocket, then replace with new implants.

3. Size change: A lot of women opt for a large implant size, sometimes against the advice of their surgeons and end up experiencing back pain or other symptoms due to an overly large breast implants. For these patients, a revision breast augmentation surgery is necessary to replace the large implants with more suitable sized ones.

4. Body changes: When the surgeon recommends an implant size, an individual’s current size and body shape is taken into consideration. If there are fluctuations in the weight, the implants shape or placement may also change so a revision breast augmentation surgery may be required to match the new implants with the current body.

5. Breast implant removal: In case of the body rejecting the implant, infection or other medical conditions, implant removal may be required. The implants are removed and the breast skin is tightened.

As with any surgery, doing the right research and finding a surgeon who has enough experience will help you avoid having surgery for a second time. However, for the other problems like capsular contracture, body changes post-surgery or cases which require implant removal, the variables differ depending on the individual.
